Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack
My family is like the majority of American families. We have suffered through the heartbreak of addiction, we have celebrated the moments of remission, and we have encouraged each other to maintain the path of recovery. The substances of choice for my loved ones ranged from alcohol to prescription painkillers, but the devastation caused by their abuse is the same. When I first shared with the nation what my own family was going through, so many people in turn shared their stories, and offered to help in the fight against this oftentimes life-or-death disease. While addiction touches each family in such a personal way, tens of thousands are going through something similar. We need to dramatically raise awareness of this disease and create a nation dedicated to preventing, treating and recovering from substance abuse and addiction. We are building a movement that will be difficult to ignore, but we need your help – please don’t be afraid to share your story. It may save someone’s life.
